Vitamin D saving elderly women - Drs. G and M Pearsall

by Drs. Gurney & Marina Pearsall 17. August 2011 09:46

Up until a recent study published in the latest edition of The Cochrane Library, it was not known if there was any benefit to vitamin D supplementation among the elderly.  These women are at a high risk of falls and fractures and are likely to be vitamin D deficient.  What the study found was that giving vitamin D3 to elderly women appeared to increase survival in institutional care settings, and that vitamin D3 reduces mortality by about 6%.  Without sufficient vitamin D, bones can become thin, brittle, or misshapen.  Vitamin D prevents rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults.  Together with calcium, vitamin D also helps protect the elderly from osteoporosis.

Vitamin D is a vitamin that is naturally present in very few foods, added to others, and available as a dietary supplement.  It is also produced when ultraviolet rays from sunlight hit the skin and cause vitamin D synthesis.
